Black Crow/ White Crow Tunes

Presented by Steve Harrison

Annie Dearman, Vic Gammon and Steve Harrison perform English traditional songs and tunes in a robust and firmly rooted English style, accompanied on various squeezeboxes, banjo and mouthorgan.

DGH’s repertory derives from a variety of sources, including traditional singers and instrumentalists; material from the folk song collectors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; manuscript tune and song books of past performers of traditional music; printed ballad sheets; and songs and tunes they just happen to hear and like.

Their CD Black Crow, White Crow (EFDSS CD11) has been described as ‘An A-list buy for anyone who loves English Traditional Song’ (English Dance & Song).

What the reviewers said:

‘Hallmarks of their style are an infectious, lively delivery, which is at once direct and upfront yet thoughtful.... A delightful release that manages to be attractive and accessible while also satisfying more specialist tastes’ Folk Roundabout

‘A live performance would be an exciting and uplifting event.... For anyone interested in traditional music, this CD should be in their collection....’ What’s Afoot Magazine

‘A strong selection of material, with unusual versions drawn from major collections.... Traditional through and through, it works its way in until ownership is essential! ... Come buy. Well, what are you waiting for?’ Tykes News

‘Here is a really tasty CD. There are powerful lusty vocals from Annie Dearman, Steve Harrison’s sensitive melodeon accompaniment, then the distinctive unaccompanied singing of Vic Gammon.... What stands out for me are the wonderful tunes to the largely traditional material - I keep finding myself singing, humming or whistling....’ Shreds and Patches

Traditional English song and dance music never sounded better.’ ‘Folkworld CD Reviews
